Today’s Task
Today’s Task – January 27, 2012
As a leader, you can’t build a team, a band or a company that is a whole lot different from who you are. An inventor can’t take himself out of the invention, even if he wants to. This idea begs the question, Who are you? What are your principles and values, and what is your purpose? “Purpose” can’t be defined as what you do; it is who and what you are. So what are you? Without self-discovery and self-knowledge, you don’t know…and until you do, it is difficult to lead others.
In recent conversations with two young teachers, it has become obvious to me that this is an area they need to explore. It is vitally important that they determine who they are and the principles for which they stand. Until they are able to answer these questions, their purpose will remain unclear both to them, and their students. As a mentor, I can share my ideas, but there is no guarantee they will work for them. They have to create their own model based on their own purpose. Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi wrote, “In all my years of coaching, I have never been successful using somebody else’s plays.” It is incumbent upon each of my two young friends to figure out their own “plays.”
Today, no every day, I encourage you to ask yourself the question, Who am I? What are my principles and values? What is my purpose? Whether you look at the group you lead and see a focused, disciplined organization or one that is undisciplined and lacks direction, remember you cannot build a team that is a whole different from who you are!
So….who are you?
Have a great day!
