Today’s Task – July 8, 2010
What if you met someone who felt you should be doing something different with your life, something better? What if they continuously tugged, pushed and lead in an effort to get you to make the appropriate changes? What if sometimes they told you things you didn’t want to hear, yet you knew they were truths? What if, despite your inability to see in yourself that which they see, their vision is right? What if all of the above has occurred in your life? You have had the good fortune of having an insightful, caring teacher!
You may have seen the popular bumper sticker “If you can read this, thank a teacher.” Certainly, that is a valid statement, but good teachers do so much more. While schools are trying to measure the value of education based on data-driven assessments, we must remember what all insightful teachers have always known; teaching is a profession designed to improve the human condition and to base our success solely on assessment tests negates the human characteristics so important in education. We must be careful that the need to “pass the test” doesn’t sap us of our passion to nurture and teach our young people.
Today, no every day, I encourage you to consider the things you have learned in life; both the necessary content to do your job effectively and more importantly, the human characteristics necessary to interact with others. I would suggest that when you look back at your developmental years, there was an insightul, caring teacher or mentor who saw something in you that was special. They tugged, pushed and lead you, sometimes sharing with you truths you did not want to hear. Today, you are successful, in part, because of their efforts. Today, if you have not already done so, I encourage you to do as the bumper sticker suggests….thank a teacher!
